The East Baton Rouge Housing Authority is an independent, autonomous agency. Its leadership and policy making are vested in a Board of Commissioners who are appointed by the Baton Rouge City-Parish and serve without pay for the good of the community.

The East Baton Rouge Housing Authority was established in 1941 to provide a decent home and suitable living environment for low-income families. The Housing Act of 1937 established a permanent public housing program. This program enabled public housing authorities to receive federal assistance to finance, develop, and manage low-income housing.

Since its inception, more than sixty years ago, the East Baton Rouge Housing Authority has provided housing and rental assistance to thousands of residents through its Public Housing and Assisted Housing (formerly Section 8) programs. Today, the EBRP Housing Authority serves approximately 3,634 families.
